Let's Get Started!
Now, the in game tutorial may be all fine and dandy, but if you want to succeed in Vega Conflict, there are a few things newbies to Kixeye games need to know:
Phrases: Many players use terms like "coiner" and "insec hitter" to mean various things... Here are a few:
Coiner: someone who uses in-game currency to shoot ahead of other players (like using money to win a game :P)
Insec, Insector, Insec hitter: Any of these terms are used for someone who hits within their own sector, and are generally looked down upon.
Blitz, Rusher, Laser fleet, etc: These terms refer to a fleet composed of ships with weapons that have short range. These fleets are generally not used for base hitting.
Sniper: This term refers to ship fleets that use railguns, gauss guns, mass drivers, etc. to stay out of the range of enemies while raining fire down upon them.
Now that you know a few, let's move on.
Just a reminder, this Basic Info page is not to teach you what the Kixeye tutorial already does, it is to get you ready to deal with both harder enemies and the community of players.
Basic types of ships are Frigates, Cruisers, Destroyers, and Battleships.
One of the most important things people miss is the command page. It's a button on the top right that looks like a mouse. It is a very helpful button that brings up a page of commands, such as right click to strafe, etc.
Firing arc is very important when considering using ships. What ship should you use, something for countering flanking or something with a small arc to concentrate fire on? For fleet attacking, the best types of ships to use are Battleships, Frigates, and Cruisers. For base hitting I would suggest Battleships and Destroyers for sniping, and Cruisers for blitzing. Remember, these are all up to you in the end.
There are three different types of weapons:
Energy: close quarters weapons with lots of damage, short range, and no deadzone (space inside of a firing arc where you cannot shoot)
Projectile: Long range slug-hurling suckers who have a high damage output and fairly large deadzone.
Explosive: Long range explosives that have an area of effect radius and do medium amounts of damage. Currently only the Plasma Torpedo has a deadzone.
It is important to keep in mind that DPS is damage per second. Just because that Mass Driver has less DPS than a Plasma Battery does NOT mean it does less damage. You have to think of it this way: A Mass Driver shoots a shot probably once every two seconds, so double the DPS to get the damage per SHOT. Now think about that 'ol Plasma Battery. The battery shoots two shots in one second, so to get the damage per shot cloud of ionized gas, you have to divide the DPS by two.
IF YOU TL;DR:
Say Mass Driver shoots 1 time every 2 seconds, and HEX missiles shoot once every second, with 2 salvo total.
MD: 2X DPS per shot (because DPS= damage/time)
HEX Missile: 1/2 DPS per shot (because DPS is assuming ALL shots hit)
So, if MD has 30 DPS and HEX missile has 50, each shot from MD does 60 damage, and each shot from HEX missile does 25 damage.

New Updates (written 12/23/13)
So, this December Kixeye has added the Terminus Mine. This makes it more difficult for rimmers and blitzers to successfully defeat a base. This can also work against you. To avoid massive self-inflicted damage, put the mines outside of each other's radius, or else destroying one will lead to a chain reaction that can annihilate your own base. Derp. So basically, the Terminus Mine is a double-edged sword, if you didn't already know. Also, a good strategy for the mines are to put them in the closest possible circle around your base, but leaving the mines far apart enough so that they don't blow each other up/blow YOU up :P.
